Dr. Paul Spudis – Can We Afford To Return To The Moon, part 2
Dr. Paul Spudis, of the Lunar and Planetary Institute, is featured luncheon speaker at ISDC — addressing the topic: Can We Afford to Return to the Moon? In this, part 2, of his address he continues making the case for a rational sustainable space policy and Cislunar development. At the conclusion of the address, Dr. Spudis receives the 2011 Space Pioneer Award from NSS Executive Director Gary Barnhard and Glenn Mahone.

While I really don’t disagree with the necessity of Paul’s plan in the long term, I think he has failed to make the argument for why it is the right thing to do now.
If the goal is just capable access to cislunar space, the argument can be made that we already have that. Human missions to service satellites have been done by NASA, and will become part of commercial space activities within the next decade.
Assuming success and growth of such commercial activities, including privately owned and operated space stations by the end of the decade, the market could be established for lunar water. At that point an economic argument could be made.
